This extraordinary full-grain leather chess set is one of the most ambitious and remarkable pieces to come out of our Port Elizabeth studio. Every single element – all 32 playing pieces and the board itself — is handcrafted from full-grain leather, cut and assembled entirely by hand with a level of detail and dedication that has to be seen to be believed.

The playing pieces are sculpted in two contrasting leather tones – natural warm tan for one side, deep midnight black for the other. Each piece is individually shaped, stitched, and finished by hand, with intricate detailing visible across every form from the humble pawns to the elaborately crafted kings and queens. No two sets are ever exactly alike – the variation in leather and hand-stitching ensures each set carries its own unique character.

The board is constructed from alternating panels of tan and black full-grain leather, neatly hand-stitched at every seam, laid flat for play and foldable for storage. Coordinate markings are tooled along the edges – a considered functional detail that doesn’t compromise the aesthetics.
